Overheard (more than once) in an art gallery in Philadelphia--or maybe
New Jersey: «But what are they for?» Whether they reflect the care, even
tenderness, with which an old craftsman in Tuscany or Maine repairs a favorite
and treasured tool or the absurdity that Jarry's Ubu Roi bestows on one of
his peculiar weapons, Siglinda's creations in this vein have no obvious
utility. Or it may be that they serve same subversive purpose, like making
us think. But one need do no more than delight in looking at them, touching
them, and--when no one is watching--playing with them.
